How to Win the Amazon Buy Box
How the Amazon Buy Box works and how to win it: the factors Amazon weighs beyond price, why fulfilment and seller metrics matter, and how to compete for it without a race to the bottom.
Last updated: July 2026
The Buy Box is the Add to Cart section of a listing, and the seller who wins it gets the sale when a shopper clicks buy. The large majority of Amazon sales go through it, so if you're sharing a listing with other sellers, winning and holding the Buy Box is close to everything. Losing it can cut your sales sharply even when nothing about your own offer changed.
It's not just about price
Price matters, but Amazon awards the Buy Box on more than the lowest number. Fulfilment method, seller metrics, stock, and shipping speed all feed in. An FBA offer at a slightly higher price often beats a cheaper FBM one, because Prime speed and reliability count. So you can win the Buy Box without always being cheapest, by being strong on the factors around price.
- Fulfilment. FBA and Prime eligibility carry real weight, because Amazon values fast, reliable delivery.
- Seller metrics. A healthy account with good order-defect and on-time numbers competes better for the box.
- In stock. You can't win the Buy Box on a product you've run out of, which is another reason stockouts hurt.
- Competitive price. You don't have to be lowest, but you do have to be in the right range.
Compete without racing to the bottom
On a shared listing it's tempting to just keep undercutting, but that ends with everyone selling at a loss. A better approach is to be competitively priced while winning on fulfilment and account health, and to use repricing to stay in range automatically rather than slashing your price by hand. If a listing only rewards the lowest price, that's a sign it may not be a listing worth fighting over.
