How to Price Your Product for Profit
A practical guide to pricing for sellers: how to set a price that sells and profits, position against competitors, win the Amazon Buy Box, and protect your margin as costs and competition shift.
Last updated: July 2026
Price is the most powerful lever you have, and the easiest to get wrong. Too high and you lose sales. Too low and you sell at a loss or train buyers to expect it. Good pricing isn't about being the cheapest, it's about finding the number that makes you the most money over time, which is rarely the lowest one.
Pricing also isn't a set-and-forget decision. Costs move, competitors change their prices, and demand shifts with the season. This module covers setting the right price and defending your profit as things change, on Amazon and on your own store.
Start from your costs, not your competitors
Before you look at what anyone else charges, work out your own floor: the price below which you don't make money once every cost is paid. That's your break-even, and the margins module shows how to find it. Only once you know your floor can you price with confidence, because you'll know exactly how much room you have to compete without selling at a loss.
Then position against the market
With your floor set, look at what comparable products charge and decide where you want to sit. You don't have to be cheapest. A slightly higher price with better images, stronger reviews, and a clearer benefit often sells better and profits more than a race to the bottom. Price is a signal too, so a too-cheap price can read as low quality just as easily as a bargain.
Keep pricing under review
The right price today may be wrong next month. Watch your competitors, your costs, and your conversion, and adjust when they move. On Amazon, winning the Buy Box often comes down to price, and repricing helps you stay competitive without living in the pricing tab. The Buy Box and repricing guides below go deeper.
