How to Plan a Product Launch

A launch checklist for sellers: setting a budget and timeline, preparing stock and your listing, planning first reviews, and defining what launch success actually looks like before you start.

Last updated: July 2026

A launch is far easier to get right when it's planned instead of improvised. Most launch failures aren't bad luck, they're missing pieces: stock that ran out, a listing that wasn't ready, no plan for reviews, no budget set aside. A short plan up front removes most of that risk.

The launch checklist

  • Stock ready and buffered. Nothing kills a launch like selling out mid-momentum. Have enough inventory to sustain the push, plus a buffer for higher-than-expected demand.
  • Listing finished and tested. Title, images, copy, and, on Amazon, backend keywords all done and checked before any traffic arrives.
  • Keywords chosen. A focused set of relevant, winnable terms to aim the launch at, from the keyword-research module.
  • A review plan. Know how you'll earn your first honest reviews, within the rules. The promotions guide covers the compliant options.
  • A budget set aside. Decide what you'll spend on ads and promotions before you start, so a slow first week doesn't panic you into stopping too early.

Set your budget and timeline

Decide upfront how much you're willing to invest in the launch and over how long. Early sales often cost you money, through ads and discounts, before they pay back in rank and organic sales, so treat that spend as an investment with a timeline rather than a loss to cut at the first sight of red. Knowing your numbers in advance keeps you steady when the early days look expensive.

Define what success looks like before you launch: a target rank, a sales rate, a review count, whatever fits your goal. Then you can tell a launch that's working from one that isn't, instead of guessing.

Then commit

Once the pieces are in place, a launch rewards commitment. Give it the budget and the time you planned before you judge it, because rank and reviews take a little while to build. A launch abandoned after three nervous days rarely had a chance to work.
