How to Avoid Stockouts on Amazon
How to stop running out of stock: setting reorder points from your lead time, keeping a safety buffer, watching for demand spikes, and why a stockout costs you rank as well as sales.
Last updated: July 2026
A stockout is one of the most expensive mistakes an Amazon seller can make, because it costs you twice. You lose the sales you'd have made, and you lose the organic rank those sales were holding, which is slow and costly to win back. Avoiding stockouts is mostly about reordering early enough, with a buffer, rather than cutting it fine.
Set a reorder point from your lead time
Your reorder point is the stock level at which you place a new order so it arrives before you run out. It comes from two things: how fast you're selling and how long a restock takes, from production through shipping to being live. If a restock takes six weeks and you sell fifty units a week, you need to reorder well before you hit three hundred units, not after. Working this out for each product is the single most effective way to avoid stockouts.
Keep a safety buffer
Forecasts are estimates and lead times slip, so build in a safety buffer: extra stock that covers a sales spike or a delayed shipment. How much depends on how variable your sales and supply are and how painful a stockout would be. The buffer costs a little in storage, but that's cheap insurance against losing rank on a product that's working.
Watch for spikes
Sudden demand, from a seasonal peak, a viral moment, or a competitor going out of stock, can empty your inventory far faster than your forecast expected. Keep an eye on your sales pace, especially in your busy periods, and be ready to expedite a restock with faster shipping when demand runs ahead of plan. Catching a spike early and reacting beats watching a best-seller sell out.
